I just read something quite alarming regarding bone mass. Did you know that the average age for peak bone mass is 25? 25?! I know I've read this before, but I guess this is the first time I've read it past the age of 25. Yikes!
So I wanted to share some tips on increasing your calcium intake because it's so important to keep our bone density at optimal levels. Another scary factoid is that 55% of people 50 years and older suffer from osteoporosis so make sure to keep your calcium intake up, and get your exercise.
- Add nonfat milk powder to milk, soups, shakes or smoothies, meat loaf, baked goods and mashed potatoes.
- Use milk or evaporated skim milk in cream soups, sauces, cocoa and casseroles instead of cream.
- Top fruit with nonfat yogurt.
- Substitute nonfat plain yogurt for sour cream or mayonnaise in dips, salad dressings or as a baked potato topping.
- Sprinkle low-fat cheese on vegetables, salads, soups or popcorn.
- Use calcium-fortified products.
And there's just a few. Do you have any ways to sneak calcium into your diet? Feel free to share!

Wow, I suddenly feel old! Something else to keep in mind--making sure you get enough Vitamin D will help calcium absorb in your body.
