Lovin' It: Steel Cut Oats

So yesterday I talked about Tosca Reno's book The Eat Clean Diet Recharged! Well, she's always mentioning the use of steel cut oatmeal as opposed to regular ol' Quaker Old-Fashioned Oatmeal. My first reaction: Isn't oatmeal just oatmeal? I really had no idea that there were more options. So what exactly are steel cut oats? According to my googling and Wikipedia, they are whole grain groats (the inner portion of the oat kernel) which have been cut into only two or three pieces by steel rather than being rolled, and resemble small rice pieces.

Yesterday morning was my first experience of making my morning power oatmeal with steel cut oats, and let me just say that my little Scottish genes were doing a jig! Yum! I still have to perfect the cooking time, but this stuff is just the right amount of chewy. I've talked about my power pumpkin oatmeal before (I'm getting even closer at perfecting the recipe), BUT I've been getting tired of it's goopy look. These steel cut oats are definitely NOT goopy.

You should definitely try these out, and think about adding them to your must have breakfast list.

Here's the living the fit life!

Good choice on the Bob's Red Mill. Oregon company! Also, I am an oatmeal girl, but just don't have the time to do the slower-cooking steel-cut version (except on weekends). So I would say that the instant stuff (not flavored) is still a good choice to get the grains.

And I wish I could have seen the jig!
